David McKee grew up in Devon, England. Later, while a student at Plymouth Art College, he began selling his cartoon drawings to newspapers. Since 1964 he has published a number of successful books for children, including the King Rollo stories, which he helped animate for British television. His first book for Lothrop was Snow Woman, of which Publishers Weekly said, "It is McKee's superb humor--conveyed almost solely in the illustrations...that wins the day." Of his second Lothrop book, Who's a Clever Baby, Publishers Weekly had this to say: "Grandma's alliterative frenzies are fascinating and readers will find Baby's manipulative stubbornness vastly amusing."
Mr. McKee enjoys traveling and doing books that "leave things unsaid." HeFrom School Library Journal:
PreS?In this cleverly crafted pop-up book, the plucky patchwork elephant strolls through the jungle. With each turn of the page, he meets friends who insist that they have a specific talent that he lacks. They claim he can't stretch like Giraffe, hide things in his mouth like Crocodile, flap his wings and fly like Bird, or swing on trees like the monkeys. By good-naturedly twisting the interpretation of each of these tasks, Elmer proves them wrong, singing, "I can too." When the other creatures remark that they can't change colors like Elmer, he sings back that they can too if they "really try." There is plenty for children to examine on each page. In addition to the clearly marked movable illustrations, there are humorous side commentaries from a rather serious owl. It is important to note that small hands may require assistance in manipulating some of the pop-ups as they are somewhat stiff. Though the text does not flow as smoothly as in other "Elmer" books, the message is clear: anything is possible when one thinks positively. Children will be drawn to the vibrant cover, and then to the same rich illustrations found in other titles about this lovable pachyderm.?Lucy Rafael, The Center for Early Education, West Hollywood, CA
