Young readers will enjoy this extended counting story that chronicles the witches, cats, owls, goats, snakes, bears, wolves, toads, crows, hares, bats, bugs, and ghosts that appear on Halloween night. The images are wonderfully specific, such as the alley cats that go clawing through garbage, hares that hunt for fallen corn, crows that dance in a pumpkin field, and bugs that feast on cold, dried-up old stew. They inspire a pleasant thrill rather than an all-out terror. The gentle cadences of the verse have a music of their own and would be very enjoyable read aloud: ``Seven wolves prowl/for a midnight meal,/stalking this, stalking that,/howling in he full moon's view,/on Halloween night./OO-oo-oo- ooh.'' Misty, gray-washed illustrations add just the right touch to the modestly spooky tone that pervades. A basically gentle book; the authors and illustrator aim for an eerie atmosphere and stay away from gut-in-the-throat scarification. (Fiction. 4+) -- Copyright ©1994, Kirkus Associates, LP. PreSchool-Grade 1-A Halloween counting book told in rhyme with a refrain ("Oo-oo-oo-ooh") that youngsters will love. Two children hover in the background of each scene, watching various spooky sights from familiar holiday images ("One witch stirs/Up a bubbling pot ...") to others that are fresh ("Five snakes slink/Over autumn leaves..."). Meanwhile, a sinuous, cloudy white shape leads the eye from page to page. This shape gains substance in the last rhyme: "Thirteen ghosts haunt/At the old school yard..."), and the story ends with a resounding "BOOOOOO!" The writing is melodious, with words that go together just right. This would make a great read-aloud, either individually or to a group. And the illustrations are stunning; soft, earthy colors and graceful lines convey a real sense of mystery. The dust jacket shows Avenda?o's skill with light and shadow, detail, and perspective. She is an artist to watch.
