9780615612065: Casting Norma Jeane: A Starlet is Transformed Into Marilyn Monroe

"SHE STARTED OUT WITH LESS THAN ANY GIRL I EVER KNEW" So recalled Hollywood modeling agent Emmeline Snively of her client Norma Jeane Dougherty at the age of 19. "But she worked the hardest. She wanted to learn. She wanted to BE SOMEBODY more than anybody I ever saw before in my life." And she became Marilyn Monroe. That is, in the eyes of all but a select few insiders who like Miss Snively saw that the greatest sex symbol of all time was a pure fabrication. An exquisitely crafted act. A dazzling illusion who disappeared as soon as the makeup came off at night. Through those insiders' eyes CASTING NORMA JEANE now recaptures the late summer of 1946 as a restless model and starlet described as "pretty but plain" steps into a role that will make her the most photographed, most talked about, and most written about woman of the 20th century.

About the Author:

James Glaeg is a journalist and documentarian whose favored milieu has been the movie and television factories of Hollywood. He has given numerous lectures and workshops on iconic media figures.

Review:

"Glaeg's first biography follows...as a plain but pretty girl with starry-eyed ambition proves herself worthy of Hollywood stardom with a mixture of radiant inner beauty and the keen ability to adapt to the role. The transformation is marked by a paradox: She's simultaneously a fabrication and an honest soul... Fans will appreciate this...look at how a star is born and nurtured before she goes supernova." -- Kirkus Reviews

"An amazing Hollywood story about the making of an icon -- written in an amazingly un-Hollywood style. Very accessible, almost novel-like in nature. Not a book for those who want name dropping. Thankfully we now get to meet the unknown folks who made possible all those future biographies. As we are transported to the year 1946 there is a closeness to the real Norma Jeane that permeates this superb book and draws the reader in. One feels almost a part of her protective circle as we watch her progress during this most important year." --A James Mason Community Book Club MUST READ

"A beautifully written and poetically told story of Marilyn's early life. Mr. Glaeg recreates actual conversations that bring to life Marilyn and the people that influenced her beginnings. By understanding Marilyn's early determination to succeed and her striving to be a good actress, one is able to understand more clearly the paths that Marilyn chose later in her life. A great book to own for the dedicated Marilyn fan." -- Greg Schreiner, President, Marilyn Remembered Fan Club

"A sensitive and insightful book about the short, formative period [when] Norma Jeane Dougherty became Marilyn Monroe... So very rich -- akin to poetry." -- Essay, Minnesota chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha International service organization

"A perfect summer read. So appealing I fell in love with narrative nonfiction as a style. And when it comes to Marilyn, it fits her to a T. You can read her story like a novel but knowing the author has his facts straight. Grab this charming book and go relax out in the sun." -- The Marilyn Monroe Book Blog
