Justin Slater, the biggest stockbroker in Honey Oaks, Texas, is found brutally murdered at the stadium just hours before the biggest game of the week in Texas high school football. Beleaguered Sheriff Dalton Gumby enlists the help of Slater’s best friend, Clayfour Peterson, a fourth-generation owner of a successful cotton gin business and bail bondsman, to help solve the case.Clayfour notices that even Justin’s ex-wife, who waged one of the nastiest divorce battles in history just three years earlier, seems as distraught over his death as anyone else in the family. But did she seek revenge and kill Justin? Other suspects include Justin’s former clients and employees, the football coaching staff, and even the star quarterback. Clayfour and Sheriff Gumby continue investigating each suspect as the football season for the Honey Oaks Bumblebees moves toward the playoffs. They all have sufficient motives for murdering Justin, and a number of them were seen near the football field on the day of the murder. But the unlikely killer never counted on Clayfour’s burning need for justice or the power of friendship.
