This is the first volume in a two-part approach to vocabulary acquisition. Written for students at intermediate level and above, it aims not only to provide learners with key vocabulary, but also to help develop their awareness of different aspects of meaning. The first part of the book contains 12 units examining how words are formed and how they behave grammatically as well as what they mean. Topics covered in this part of the book include collocation, sense relations, metaphor and style. The second part presents useful vocabulary on the themes of people and human experience. Covered are such subjects as the human body, clothing, ages and ageing and perception and the senses. There are also exercises and activities designed to arouse the student's interest, and suggestions for discussion and group activities are provided.
