Chopin loved dance forms and was familiar with the waltz in particular from early childhood. In Warsaw, as in many other European capitals, the modern waltz superseded traditional dance forms in theearly nineteenth century. Usually conceived in a quick tempo, Chopin's waltzes were composed for the salon and designed to entertain. When Robert Schumann was once asked whether Chopin's waltzes were suitable for dancing, he replied, "Only by countesses."
