Jahrhunderts, namentlich zu Nathaniel Hawthorne und Henry David Thoreau. Es finden sich Einflüsse des Poststrukturalismus im Sinne von Jacques Derrida und der Psychoanalyse von Jacques Lacan. Auster variiert in seinen Büchern die Frage des Verhältnisses von natürlicher Ordnung zur symbolischen Ordnung der Dinge. Die Transzendentalisten glauben an eine Trennung der Gegensätze, zugleich aber auch an die Möglichkeit der Rückführung zueinander. Lacans Theorie besagt, dass wir die Welt durch Sprache wahrnehmen und strukturieren.
