9780553351934: We Live Too Short and Die Too Long: How to Achieve and Enjoy Your Natural 100-Year-Plus Life Span

“Here is a book on health that puts it all together—a book that gives you the feeling that a personal friend is sharing things of great value with you.”—Norman Cousins, author of Anatomy of an Illness

Do you expect to live to be 100—and remain healthy and active throughout your very long life? Walter M. Bortz, M.D., a leading authority on aging, former co-chairman of the AMA-ANA Task Force on Aging, and faculty member at Stanford University, says you should. Drawing on a fascinating range of research into the human life span, he shows that America’s thousands of centenarians are simply living out the healthy, active, natural life the human body was designed to achieve: one million hours, or 120 years.

In this groundbreaking work, Dr. Bortz sets out the essential, controllable elements of longevity and spells out effective, dynamic strategies to help you prevent premature death and add decades of active, satisfying life. He outlines the basic practices you can start today—no matter what your age. And his program of eight simple directives includes both physical and psychological goals that feed the human spirit . . . and allow you to enjoy life fully for more years than you ever thought possible.

About the Author:

Walter M. Bortz II is a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine and a graduate of Williams College and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Dr. Bortz's research has focused on the metabolism of carbohydrate and fat, and the importance of exercise in healthy aging.

From Library Journal:

Old age is the ultimate epidemic--there are now three million people in the United States over 85--and Bortz estimates that the potential life expectancy is 120 years. Although this sounds like tabloid sensationalism, Bortz's assertions are amply substantiated by the latest research and his own impressive credentials as a practicing physician and past president of the American Geriatric Society. Merely achieving a maximum lifespan is not the goal of this book, however; it is that old age can be good and its goodness depends on individual commitment to cultivating a healthy lifestyle. There is nothing revolutionary in this approach--sensible diet and continued physical and mental activity are prescribed--but the lively, authoritative style and references to scientific and literary sources make this a readable, informative addition to popular geriatrics collections.

Descripción Bantam. Paperback. Estado de conservación: New. Paperback. 368 pages. Dimensions: 8.2in. x 5.1in. x 0.9in.Over a decade ago Dr. Walter M. Bortz put forth his remarkable claim that we are not only biologically programmed to surpass the conventional life expectancy, but that our very approach to aging is grounded in misconceptions and wrong-headedness. The newly revised and expanded edition of We Live Too Short and Die Too Long: How to Achieve and Enjoy Your Natural 100-Year-Plus Life Span reaches out to the now (or soon to be) graying generation of baby boomers and their families to discuss the keys to unlocking this innate longevity and coping with it in context of the 21st century via his six precepts for successful aging. Though great advances in science and medicine have been achieved, it is our perceptions of aging that still prevent us from living as long and as enjoyably as we possibly can. That the perceptions and realities of aging have shifted so drastically since publication of the 1992 edition only underscores the fact that Dr. Bortzs pioneering research is foundational to our understanding of this subject. This item ships from multiple locations. Your book may arrive from Roseburg,OR, La Vergne,TN. Paperback. Nº de ref. de la librería 9780553351934
