When Rebecca's mother marries Pres's father, Rebecca is sure that living in the same house with the guy of her dreams will turn her new step-brother into her new love. Even though her best friend, Celeste, warns her to face reality, Rebecca doesn't listen. She thinks Pres is the perfect guy for her! But Celeste's brother, Josh, has been friends with Pres for years, and Celeste thinks she knows what she's talking about. Rebecca's not so sure about her relationship with her new step-father. She knows he can't replace her real dad, but she thinks she can get through to him by helping him with the school play. From Publishers Weekly:

This book follows the format of many a teenage romance: sophomore girl falls for handsome senior, then comes to realize that the boy next door is more her type. But even if the impending conflicts and final outcome become obvious in the first few chapters, it is delightful to trace the twists and turns of the plot. When her mother remarries, Rebecca becomes stepsister to the boy of her dreams, but soon discovers that her new living arrangement is more awkward than convenient. Pres, the new brother, has eyes for Celeste, Rebecca's best friend. In turn, Celeste's brother Josh has more than a passing interest in Rebecca. Things, of course, end happily--everyone gets a date for the upcoming graduation dance. The most refreshing aspect of this contemporary story is that all major characters are remarkably well adjusted for their age and are extremely likable as well. The teenagers are presented as respectful, considerate and sensitive; Rebecca and Pres each make a strong, continual effort to adjust to new stepparents and accept each other as brother and sister. The author maintains a fast pace and brings off natural-sounding dialogue; overall, this novel is good entertainment. Ages 10-up.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 6-8-- Rebecca is excited about her mother's marriage to Mr. Larson, the high school English teacher, because she will also be "under the same roof" with Larson's handsome son, Pres. Celeste, Rebecca's best friend, tries to dissuade Rebecca from pursuing Pres and simply to accept him as a "brother." When Rebecca writes a town history school play and shares directorship with Mr. Larson, she arranges for Celeste and Pres to play the lead parts. Of course, they fall in love, and Rebecca is the last to figure it out. In the end, Rebecca is forced to accept the fact that Pres is only interested in a brother/sister relationship. She patches up her friendship with Celeste and begins to date Celeste's brother. Every scene in this book is totally predictable; everyone (characters in the story and readers) realizes that Celeste and Pres are a couple except Rebecca. The dialogue is stilted and unrealistic for high school-aged students. The ending is contrived and so "happily ever after" that it's unbelievable. --Bonnie L. Raasch, C. B.
