Offering a very easy-to-follow and practical approach for students who are learning to conduct their own research projects, this engaging text is designed to help students not only master the concepts of the course, but also become critical consumers of everyday research-related information. The authors provide numerous examples from the real world (as well as from many different areas of psychology), actual media reports with critical thinking questions, and case studies that provide insight into how a researcher "thinks through" issues of research design. The wide range of applications involves students and helps them understand how the research tools used in psychological research help satisfy our curiosity about why people think, act, and feel the way they do. The text approaches the topic of research in a very balanced manner, providing an overview of experimental and non-experimental research designs, an overview of the appropriate statistical analyses and a description of how scientific knowledge can be disseminated using APA format.

Professor Lammers also received an NSF grant for utilizing technology in teaching statistics and research design.Review:
"The research examples are drawn from a wide variety of fields of psychology, giving the student a good introduction to applications of methods across the discipline."
"This text does an excellent job of integrating statistical procedures with the designs without inundating the student with statistics, typically taught in another stand-alone course. It helps to circumvent the age-old question of how to best structure the sequence of exposing the student to stats or design first."
"The section on oral and poster presentations is especially useful, particularly with the increasing number of poster presentations at conferences. This section also emphasizes the importance of having students learn to disseminate findings to audiences beyond just the academic community. This is an especially important skill for students intending to pursue careers in I/O psychology where they will have to explain findings in a manner that is accessible to managers, consumers, etc."
"I think this manuscript is superior to similar texts because of the engaging writing style of the authors. They do an excellent job of showing how the research tools that are used in psychological research can be used to satisfy our curiosity about why people thin, act and feel the way they do."
"The authors explain even the more difficult concepts in such a clear way, using step-by-step logic and good examples, that I believe that students using this textbook will emerge with a very good understanding of the topics covered here."
