This comprehensive, mainstream text presents the basic theoretical, conceptual, and methodological tenets of sociology in a readable and personal manner. Its balanced presentation challenges students to pose their own questions about society and to think critically about the world in which they live. It presents the study of sociology as a means by which students can transcend personal and societal prejudices. This Seventh Edition continues its tradition of integrating innovative pedagogy directly into the book, such as: a built-in student study guide; lecture launching CNN video segments that link to text-specific topics; and continued use of the SQ3R (survey, question, read, recite and review) learning technique.

Jon Shepard has a Ph.D. from Michigan State University. Since 1989, he has been a professor of sociology at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute where he is currently department head of the Department of Management. He has received several teaching awards, including the University Great Teacher Award at the University of Kentucky, where he received his Master's Degree and taught from 1968 to 1989. In addition to introductory sociology, business ethics is another of his current teaching and research interests.Review:
"The SQ3R technique is one of the major reasons for my adopting this textbook. The sectional questions, rather than just topic and subtopic coverage, provide the students with the opportunity to contrast their answers with those provided by the text. The additional tables and/or graphics permits the students to engage in their own personal "debunking" process"
"Sociology In The News and Doing Research sections are impressive features of this book. They tend to focus students’ attention on contemporary social issues, make sociological concepts more applicable, and enhance critical thinking."
"I adopted this text because of its critical thinking/questioning approach to social issues, its balanced presentation of major theoretical perspectives, its emphasis on both basic and applied sociology, and its global perspective."
