Susan Lea, professor of Physics and Astronomy at San Francisco State University, has a B.A. and M.A. in mathematics from Cambridge University (with an emphasis in theoretical physics), and a Ph.D. in astronomy from the University of California, Berkeley. She is a Shapley lecturer for the American Astronomical Society, the author of PHYSICS: THE NATURE OF THINGS (ITP, 1997), and a flight instructor. Her research emphasis includes theoretical astrophysics, especially accretion problems and investigation of x-ray sources, and numerical hydrodynamics.Review:
"I would use this text if available. In particular, I liked the choice and development of the examples in the text. This book reminds me in spirit of the famous three volume physics lectures by Feynman, Leighton, and Sands, which is still around. Professor Lea's subject matter is more advanced, and more mathematical, but the appeal to the student's intuition and the enthusiasm of the text are similar, and to my mind very positive for someone seeing this perhaps for the first time, or repairing an inadequate grasp of the material from a prior exposure.
