Grade 5-6-- A fascinating concept: descriptions of marine babies from alligators and turtles (reptiles) to jacanas and penquins (birds), lobsters (crustaceans), mola molas and sharks (fish), nudibranchs and squids (mollusks), and whales (mammals) arranged as an alphabet and dictionary. Unfortunately, the coverage is not broad enough to be a real dictionary, and it's too detailed be an ABC book. Some entries are anthropomorphized, e.g., "with the jacana, it's the female that has the last say" because after she lays the eggs she leaves them for the male to raise. Some writing is imprecise, e.g., the temperature of the nest in which the alligator lays her eggs determines the sex of the babies, but the text doesn't specify how; lobsters' large front claws are referred to as "delicious." The whale babies are born after a period vaguely referred to as 9-18 months of development; turtle species are numbered both at 7 and at 7 or more, and penguins at both 17 and 18 species worldwide. These discrepancies are confusing. At least one glaring typo has the nudibranch "flatten" up (instead of "fatten" up). Beautiful, full-color glossy photographs appear on almost every page, but they do not always illustrate the point made in the text. --Frances E. Millhouser, Reston Regional Library, VA
