Andrea Rita Dworkin (1946 - 2005) was an American radical feminist and writer best known for her criticism of pornography, which she argued was linked to rape and other forms of violence against women. At the same time, she maintained a dialogue with political conservatives and wrote a topically-related book, Right-Wing Women. After suffering abuse from her first husband, she was introduced to radical feminist literature and began writing Woman Hating. Coming to New York, she became an activist on several issues and a writer, eventually publishing 10 books on feminism. LETTERS FROM A WAR ZONE is a personal and immediate book. Here, Dworkin gives us her experience of speaking out and speaking to women; being silenced again and again by publishers, and at the same time, living her life at the center of the debate on First Amendment rights; being a battered wife, marching, organizing, addressing the Attorney General's Commission on Pornography; as well as teaching "Wuthering Heights". Since 1976, the women's movement has changed; the battle lines have been drawn and redrawn, but Andrea Dworkin remained strong, passionate, consistent, and radical - as Erica Jong says "a risk-taker in a world of bet-hedgers".

From Publishers Weekly:

For outspoken feminist Dworkin, pornography, prostitution, incest, wife-beating and rape are the most visible signs of men's need to control and do violence to women. Contempt for women, she asserts, is the bedrock of our male-supremacist culture, and in these 37 impassioned, often angry essays, speeches and reviews from the last decade or so, the author of Women Hating and Intercourse is confrontational and thought-provoking. Included are feminist appreciations of Tennessee Williams's plays, of Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights , and of the novels of Jean Rhys; an interview with Margaret Papandreou, American-born wife of the Greek prime minister, and a piece on oppression of women in the Middle East lend an international perspective. But mostly, Dworkin sticks close to home, analyzing the subordination of women in marriage and the workplace, and waging a battle against civil libertarians who oppose restrictions on pornography.

From Library Journal:

Dworkin is a prominent and controversial feminist political theorist. This compilation of her writings from 1976 to 1987 contains speeches, literary criticism, and her testimony before the Attorney General's Commission on Pornography. Present throughout are the themes of women dominated and silenced by men, of anger and powerlessness in a male society, and of the danger of a doctrine of biological superiority. Dworkin's zealous opposition to pornography is well documented here, as are her problems in getting published because of her militant anti-male stance. There are definite notes of pride and self-pity in this book, but Dworkin's dedication to her cause cannot be questioned. This book will be released simultaneously with a paperback reprint of Pornography ( LJ 6/1/81). Both books are recommended for all collections.
