The social background of the supporters of Nazism has been the subject of intense debate since the early 1930s. Was the Nazi party a predominantly middle-class party or a people's party? Detlef MÜhlberger provides a comprehensive summary of the answer to this question, based on extensive sociological and psephological evidence. His lucid text is supported by numerous tables, illustrating that Nazi support came from all social classes.

Detlef Mühlberger is a Lecturer in Modern European History at Oxford Brookes University.
