Every year since 1955 an international jury has met in Holland under the auspices of the World Press Photo Foundation to choose the world's finest press photographs. Publishing the results of the 42nd World Press Photo Contest, this book contains the best press photographs from 1998 - some 200 pictures submitted by photojournalists, picture agencies, newspapers and magazines throughout the world - capturing the most powerful, moving and sometimes disturbing events of the year.

World Press Photo is an international nonprofit organization that supports and promotes photojournalism and organizes an annual press photography contest. Aside from representing what is judged to be the best of photojournalism in 1999, this collection also reflects a wide spectrum of headline-grabbing and ordinary events, including the intifada riots against Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory, the aftermath of the bombing of the U.S. embassy in Kenya, ethnic clashes in Albania, flooding in Bangladesh, and various human dramas and amusements. The foreword praises the heroic efforts of photojournalists and laments the increasing barriers and animosity aimed at them by some governments. The book is organized into topics: people in the news, portraits, sports, daily life, the arts, nature and the environment, science and technology, and general news. The powerful images, in black-and-white and color, record news and provide a fascinating, sometimes disturbingly graphic view of the human condition. Vanessa BushReview:
