A presentation of an array of the most ingenious, frustrating, beautiful and terrible visual solutions that designers and illustrators have invented to help us handle modern technology and everyday products. It shows us how to floss our teeth properly, where to insert the printer cartridge, which button to press to transfer a telephone call, how to use chopsticks, how to open a milk carton and where to exit the aeroplane in case of emergency landing. The volume traces the history of visual instructions and considers how our reluctant dependence upon them increases by the minute. But it also presents a variety of clever concepts and solutions that designers have used to show us how to do what we need to do. It includes an overview of the basic elements of visual instructions: the baffling yet remarkable drawings, cartoons and symbols that tell us where to cut, when to twist, how to repeat or how not to do all of the above.

Descripción London : Thames & Hudson, 1999. Condición: Sehr gut. 144 S. Umschlag leicht berieben, sonst gutes Exemplar. - Text engl. - Bedienungsanleitungen müssen nicht unverständlich sein: Das Buch zum guten Bedienungsanleitungsdesign - This book contends that products definitely do not speak for themselves and that it's only getting worse. It also surveys a wide range of solutions that designers and illustrators can employ in creating visual instructions: mediums they can use, concepts they can apply and various ways they can communicate to different target groups. The book then looks at inventive instructional elements in detail, more or less in the order they should be produced and used, from warnings and identification of parts to composition and connections through the movements and sequences that must be performed and finally, the successful results: a VCR that works! We feature the lucky strikes of anonymous artists. Ingenious solutions to tricky communication problems. We do not judge their effectiveness or beauty, but merely show what surprised us as original, creative, thrilling, touching or simply unbelievable. You may find examples from a manual that drove you crazy. We collected these illustrations from manuals, cut them from packages, copied them from museum and company archives, and stole them from airplanes. Too often, we never even saw the products that accompanied the illustrations. We've enlarged some pieces and added or changed colors for a few others. At certain points, the images have been arranged to facilitate comparison. But in general we give you these illustrations without prettifying or perfecting them-the authentic pictures are alienating enough. The language of visual instructions remains very primitive, with a limited number of signs and a weakly developed grammar. Visual instructions are still a small sub-category of visual information.
