"The Science of Checkers and Draughts is designed to save you time and effort in the study of this ancient but ever-popular game. Most players have spent all their time studying the openings to the neglect of the endings, the most difficult and delicate stage of checkers, and few players really take the trouble to concentrate on and master the end-game. Here are 101 end-play problems presented with their solutions, and when you have studied these you will be on your way toward championship play. Tom Wiswell, unrestricted World Checker champion from 1951 to 1972, has probably written more on the subject of checkers or draughts, as it is sometimes called, than any other author. For more than 30 years the author has specialized in the end-game, and most of the positions shown in this book arose in actual play during his exhibitions, matches, team play, and New York knockout tourneys. Wiswell offers you an added challenge: if you think that you can upset the terms of any of the problems shown, or can demonstrate a dual solution, he will study its soundness and include it (with appropriate credit) in his future publications on the game. The format of this lesson book is attractive, with its checkerboard diagrams, problems, and solutions with notes done one to a page. Once you have mastered the numbers of the squares, interpretation of the moves becomes second nature, especially with tips given you in the brief notes, which incidentally provided charming, casual commentary on the Checker world and its players, with sidelights on the Chess and Checker Club of New York...
