Descripción W.H. Allen, London, 1972. Hard Cover. Estado de conservación: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. First Edition. A near Fine unmarked copy with no inscriptions with dustjacket which has two repaired closed tears and and is not price clipped. First British edition. 184 pages. 13 illustrations. The story of Nat King Cole begins with a skinny, four-year old boy being pushed onto the stahe of a Chicago theatre to play 'Yes, We Have No Bananas' on the piano. It ends in a hospital room in Santa Monica, California, into which poured messages of prayer and hope from all over the world. In the 41 year interval between his first public performance and his death from cancer, Nat King Cole, the minister's son, became a star of stage, screen, radio and television, and the singing idol of much of the world. He was the first black star to have national radio and television shows, and the first to take an integrated song-and-dance group on the road. But although he was the friend of Presidents, he was also a black man in a white world. He could find no national sponsor for his televison show, Klansmen viciously attacked him in his home state of Alabama, white neighbours fought against him when he bought his home in Los Angeles. In this warm and moving book, his widow relates the triumphs and struggles of her late husband. It is a story of nostalgia, tragedy and inspiration. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
