The cutthroat world of television news broadcasting is the setting of this entertaining novel. Martha, Jill, and Caroline are ambitious news correspondents who learn you can't have it all without paying a price. Though Martha, the competent veteran, is the apparent focus of the novel (it begins with her suicide attempt), it is the ruthless Caroline who carries the story. Sexually abused as a child, totally amoral, Caroline is both vulnerable and vicious as she uses friends and lovers and friends' lovers to get to the top. Going Live 's plot is predictable and the writing glosses over details about the TV news world that would have differentiated it from other career-women novels. Still, Dobbin's ability to create strong, identifiable characters makes this an enjoyable novel, perfect for light fiction readers. Donna L. Nerboso, New York Univ. Lib.
