This fascinating new series looks at key inventions that have shaped the way we live. Each book takes a specific area of invention, such as communications, and follows the development and progression of items within this, such as printing presses and satellites. The books cover life before the invention, its impact, key players, their mistakes and successes and the breakthough's later evolution. Each book contains: - biography boxes of key people named in the science curriculum - "bad" inventions boxes for particularly disastrous inventions that didn't work - key date charts - "how it works" diagrams

Grade 5-8-These titles examine major inventions and their effect on society. Dowswell shows how medical instruments and procedures went from experimentation to daily use over the course of human history. Williams looks at technology and the inventions that preceded the computers we know today. The inventions are arranged chronologically, with diagrams showing how they work and biographical information about the inventors. The full-color photos, reproductions, and drawings are plentiful and effectively used. A key-date chart flows across the bottom of each recto, showing when other related innovations occurred. The information contained in the books is well organized and will be a boon to report writers. While there are many books available for this audience about inventions and inventors, these titles will be helpful to researchers seeking specific information.
