Emphasis is given to a sound physical understanding of fluid flow and its engineering applications, rather than to mathematical techniques. The opening chapter has been expanded to provide a broader introduction to fluid mechanics. Dr. John Ward-Smith served an engineering apprenticeship with Vickers-Armstrong (Aircraft) and studied Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering at Kingston Technical College (now Kingston University). He obtained the degrees of MSc from the College of Aeronautics (now Cranfield University) and DPhil from the University of Oxford, where he undertook research on aspects of fluid flow in ducts. From 1971 to 1995 he was Lecturer, subsequently Senior Lecturer, in Mechanical Engineering at Brunel University. Before he retired in 2002, he was Senior Research Fellow in Biomechanics in the Department of Sport Sciences at Brunel. He is the author of some 50 technical papers and three previous books including Internal Fluid Flow and Pressure Losses in Ducted Flows.Review:
