Review:

'essential reading for fan and academic alike.' - The Velvet Light Trap

From the Publisher:

Using our favourite Springfield family as a case study, Watching with The Simpsons examines the textual and social role of parody in offering critical commentary on other television programs and genres.

Jonathan Gray brings together textual theory, discussions of television and the public sphere, and ideas of parody and comedy. Including primary audience research, it focuses on how The Simpsons has been able to talk back to three of television’s key genres - the sitcom, adverts and the news - and on how it holds the potential to short-circuit these genre’s meanings, power, and effects by provoking reinterpretations and offering more media literate recontextualizations.

Examining television and media studies theory, the text of The Simpsons, and the show’s audience, Gray attempts to fully situate the show’s parody and humour within the lived realities of its audiences. In doing so, he further explores the possibilities for popular entertainment television to discuss issues of political and social importance.

A must read for any student of media studies.

Descripción Routledge, 2005. Estado de conservación: New. Brand New, Unread Copy in Perfect Condition. A+ Customer Service! Summary: This is a study of intertextuality on television (the way in which tv texts refer to and make assumptions about the audience's knowledge of other genres or tv shows. Jonathan Harris' main case is The Simpsons, the perfect example of a tv show that contains mini-parodies of other genres and texts within its own (the family sitcom). For example, the classic "Cape Fear" episode in which Sideshow Bob is released from prison vowing to wreak revenge on Bart and his family (having convinced the parole board that "Die Bart Die" tattooed on his chest is a Germanic expression of admiration). Jonathan uses the example of The Simpsons to argue that tv texts and tv watching is a far less closed-off business than many tv scholars imagine and that we should always consider a text's meanings, power and effects in relation to those of other texts. The study includes a qualitative audience research study involving a small group of Simpsons viewers. Nº de ref. de la librería ABE_book_new_0415362024
