Woody is dismayed when a new student teacher, Miss Plunkett, shows up in his second grade classroom. She doesn't know how anything is supposed to be done. She gets upset when she finds out what Woody has brought for show and tell--his fish, Huey, dead since the day before--and Woody gets in trouble. But when she needs help, Woody comes to the rescue, and finds that there's another side to Miss Plunkett. Told in short, easy-to-read chapters, this past-paced and funny story skillfully targets the concerns of second graders.

Stephanie Greene is the author of many books for young readers, including the popular Owen Foote books. Ms. Greene lives in Chapel Hill, N.C. Her website is www.stephaniegreenebooks.com.From School Library Journal:
Grade 2-4-Likable second grader Woody suddenly finds himself in a lot of trouble. He gets off to a bad start with his student teacher by bringing in his dead fish for show-and-tell. Later, he and his new friend Billy are sent to the principal's office for trying to conceal a dead worm. Returning from the office, the boys see Miss Plunkett standing with her back to them, working on a display case with her shoes standing solo in the middle of the hall. Billy quickly grabs them and deposits them in the garbage. Woody retrieves the shoes and is finally able to warm up to his teacher when she shares a childhood story with him. In nine short chapters, Greene's tale of friendship, kindness, and conscience in the classroom employs simple vocabulary, varied sentence length, and large print. There is one black-and-white, full-page sketch per chapter. The humor is classic second grade, with slimy creatures and bathroom buffoonery. However, some of the classroom situations, such as the show-and-tell circle, make the book better for reading aloud to kindergarteners and first graders than for early chapter-book readers.
