I foresee that some readers maybe apt to accuse me of trenchin upon delicacy in certain details of the sixth ans seventh chapters in this volume. Thou h the circumstances there treated of had no trivia influence on Sir Walter Scott's history and character, I should have been inclined, for many reasons, toomit them; but the choice was, in fact not left to me,-for they had been mentioned, and mis resewed, in various receding sketches of the Life which I had un ertaken to illustrate. Such being the case, I considered it as my duty to tell the story truly and intelligibly: but I trust I have avoided any unnecessary disclosures; and, afier all, there was nothin to disclose that could have attached any sort of b ame to any of the par ties concerned.
