Sinopsis
'New Hodder English 1, 2, 3' is a revised, full-colour course for students aged 11-14. Each book in the series provides the material for a full year's work, organised into seven units of study, which address objectives in the National Literacy Strategy Framework for Key Stage 3 and promote an interactive teaching approach essential to raising standards.

There is something refreshingly pre-millennial about this new series from Hodder & Stoughton - no three-dimensional mapping matrix; an abundance of hand-drawn illustrations; and an introduction that dares to own the adjective "progressive". Although the blurb claims that the key stage 3 strategy is addressed, there is barely a mention of the word "objective", and this alone will endear the series to the hearts of thousands of English teachers. What is on offer here is a structured programme of half-termly units, each of which addresses the same type of material - but with appropriate progression and development - in Years 7, 8 and 9. These include in each case a discrete language unit, (although language points are address throughout) a poetry unit, a unit focused on extended writing and a unit about a major literary genre. The books do not shy away from tackling hefty chunks of literature, including an abridged but unparaphrased edition of The Withered Arm in the Year 8 book, and a unit based on Macbeth in Book 3. This text is part of the "New Hodder English" series, which follows the principles of the first "Hodder English" series, offering an incremental programme of integrated language and literature study through half-termly units. This series offers a course designed for the National Curriculum for 2000. Each book offers a full year's work divided into five half-term units, plus two mini units in the final half term which help the pupil prepare for the following year. Progression is built into each unit, each book and across the course, and each unit focuses on quality literary and non-literary texts including many works by writers recommended in the Programme of Study. Purposeful speaking and listening activities are also included, along with activities which encourage the use of IT and the development of ICT skills. Book Three is for use with Year 9 students of English studies. It is also suitable for first year secondary pupils in Scotland and Ireland. Units include a whole unit on "Macbeth", two units dedicated to reading and writing skills in preparation for SATs, and a poetry unit to prepare pupils for poetry study to be encountered in future stages.
