Mason Drake and Tree Summerwood, American biologists, survive a helicopter crash in Venezuela where they discover a 5,000-year-old Chinese city hidden deep in a lush valley. This society is partly based on the practice of sexual yoga, but is dying because of its lack of male offspring. Its shamanic empress, Fang Shih, aims to produce the Lung-Hu, a god-like - and hermaphroditic - human being. Tree and Mason become caught up in a love triangle with the beautiful K'un Chien - who turns out to be the sacred hermaphrodite long awaited by the empress.
