From School Library Journal:

Kindergarten-Grade 3 Despite some overwriting and heavy reliance on stock elements, this pleasantly predictable tale of love triumphant can be enjoyed both for its own sake and for its considerably more original illustrations. In traditional fashion, a hero courts a princess who sets him successive tests, one in each season. But the achievement of each task proves intellectualthe answer to a riddleas the Troubadour demonstrates his wit rather than his mettle. The ultimate proof of his intelligence is his final choice of the innkeeper's daughter, Rose, over the haughty princess. The illustrations give the tale a rococo ambiance and make ingenious use of a favorite 18th-Century technique, the silhouette. The human actors are shown exclusively in silhouette, but the blackness of the figures is relieved by sumptuous watercolor backgrounds (and touches of colored clothing). A double-page spread celebrates each season, and the exquisitely detailed chateaux (the book is virtually an homage to grand 18th-Century architecture and artifacts) are counterpointed by a lush extravagance of natural surroundings. In fact, the splendid illustrations set a standard that the text can't quite meet, although it gets full marks for trying. Patricia Dooley, formerly at Drexel University, Philadelphia

From Publishers Weekly:

This fairy-tale romance, spiced with a French baroque flavor, tells the story of Roland, a cunning troubadour, who tries his wits at winning the hand of the king's daughter, Princess Ermina. But the Princess, cold-hearted and aloof, tests Roland one time too manyuntil he finally discovers he's already won the real prizeRose, the innkeeper's shy daughter, who has loved him all along. The tale is rich in character and texture, and moves along swiftly to its happy ending. The spirited illustrations are peopled with delicately detailed silhouetted figures in ornate period costumes. Scenes of the summer countryside and bonfires steaming under star-filled wintry nights add to the enjoyment of the story.
