Grade 4-6-- Rosy Cole is back, meddling in other people's lives with the help of her loyal friend Hermione Wong, and with the usual resulting fun for her readers. This time she's interested in romance, both in series books--the type their teacher never assigns and her mother calls "junk"--and for her teen-age sisters. The overblown prose of the series books inspires Rosy and her friends to design a project for her sisters and their boyfriends that will culminate in an evening at the prom worthy of "Sugerwater High." Much plotting and planning is frequently thwarted by misunderstanding as the real people refuse to behave according to the books. But the climactic night is not all disappointment, when the two boys who have interested Rosy and Hermione arrive to take them to their own dance. Greenwald's simple sentences in large print lure readers and move the story rapidly, while her deft, lively sketches catch the humor and actions of the characters. If anyone can woo girls from series books to a bit more substantial plotting and character depiction, it will be Rosy. --Sylvia S. Marantz, Wellington School, Columbus, OH
