An extensively revised English version of the author's doctoral dissertation originally published in 1992 in Japanese. With a focus on the Historiographical Institute at the U. of Tokyo, she examines the way in which government interests, indigenous traditions of scholarship, impulses from the West and rise of the modern nation-state combined to shape the modern academic discipline of history in Japan.
