9780307955548: The Stud Book

Sarah studies animal behavior at the Oregon Zoo. An expert on the mating habits of captive animals, she is increasingly desperate to create sweet little offspring of her own. Georgie is busy navigating the terrors of new motherhood—from misplaced postpartum painkillers to the potential sublimation of her identitywhile her husband finds solace in bourbon and televised violence. (Dead girl on the screen? Take a shot!). Dulcet, defiantly married and childless, makes a living stripping down in high school gyms to sell the beauty of sex-ed. Nyla is out to save the earth while possibly losing her own teen daughter to the world of drugs and the occult. As these friends navigate a space between freedom and intimacy, they realize the families they forge through shared experience are as important as those inherited through birth.
A smart, edgy, and poignantly funny exploration of the complexities of what parenthood means today, The Stud Book demonstrates that when it comes to babies, we can learn a lot by considering our place in the animal kingdom.

From the Author:

I would love for one professional reviewer to notice that this book is secretly very much a work of environmental literature, disguised as a chatty, dark comedy about the lives of mothers, would-be mothers and never-will-be mothers but still adult women and sometimes the husbands, dates, fathers and other men alongside them. In the time it took me to write this book, I would estimate one billion humans were born, all over the planet. That's a lot of people. In my life-time, the world's population has doubled. I love babies and children, and a great number of adults, but I worry that the planet can't sustain our rapid, invasive species behavior. How can a person contain a deep love of humanity alongside a fear of overpopulation? It's a precarious balance.  Because this book is concerned with population growth, it is a book with a large cast of characters. When I wrote it, I identified heavily with each character in turn--even the men in the book. I tried to understand them all, and to look at how the various impulses of people in close proximity builds a communal narrative between them. Then I looked for the jokes, the moments of humor, and the reason we're all here, the love. I hope you might pick it up, check it out, and take a moment to think about humanity with me. In a world of reality TV that celebrates mass production of human reproduction, I tried to raise a few questions. With gratitude, Monica
