9780304361861: This is Uncool: The 500 Greatest Singles Since Punk and Disco

In 1977, the Sex Pistols burst on the scene with "Anarchy in the UK," and transformed popular music forever. Along with that song, every one of these singles helped reshape style, language, and performance. This is the story of how music and the world change, how bands reach a peak and dominate the scene briefly before fading away, about the undeniable power of certain records ("Smells Like Teen Spirit," for example). Here are punk and grunge, disco and rock, funk and electronica, rap and hip-hop. Every incisive, illuminating, and outspoken essay defies the accepted standpoint of music journalism. From Elvis Costello's Alison and The Bee Gees' Stayin' Alive to Bjork's Hyperballad and Missy Elliot's The Rain, it's a truly provocative read.

About the Author:

Garry Mulholland is a well-known and well-respected music journalist and has written for many of the popular music publications; he is currently writing for one of the most authoritative, Mojo, and for The Guardian, as well as acting as a Contributing Editor to Time Out.

From Booklist:

Mulholland's pick singles of 1976-99 appear chronologically because telling why "No. 361 is better than No. 362 seems like a hellish nightmare." First up: the Sex Pistols' "Anarchy in the UK," and Mulholland spaces pithy commentaries with sleeve and label art until Artful Dodger's "Re-Rewind the Crowd Say Bo Selecta" on page 432. An artist index aids determining which personal faves are slighted and which lame-os exalted. Bob Marley and the Wailers score zip in Mulholland's world, while top-40 reggae-ists Dennis Brown and Gregory Isaacs manage one each. Sheesh! There's only one Ramones song, "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker." Incredible! Kudos to the Brit, though, for recognizing D.C. go-go heroes Trouble Funk for "Drop the Bomb," and for including plenty of the Clash. List books are great for warm memories and heated debates. With its in-your-face attitude and strong opinions, this is a good one, even if Lee Scratch Perry's very influential "I Am a Madman" and "Introducing Myself" (they were singles, right?) and the Marley-Scratch "Punky Reggae Party" ain't in it.
