When the Third Reich collapsed, 70 million Germans were left bewildered and terrified, their leaders dead or incarcerated; the victors saw fully for the first time the unbearable legacy of death, atrocity, and destruction left by the Nazis. Here is the view from Hitler's bunker, where news came of his troops surrendering on every front. An extraordinary story of ruin, retribution, sometimes courage and occasional suicide...and the ultimate rise from these ashes of a powerful, democratic republic.

James Lucas fought with the British infantry in the Second World War. He has long since established a reputation as a popular historian with a particular interest in good soldiering. Battle Group! Is one of a number of books about his former enemy.Review:
This is a fine book , all too often overshadowed by Max Hastings 'Armageddon'. It is an excellent work which covers areas of the closing days of the conflict not embraced by Hastings work . A full appreciation of the last days of the Third Reich will therefore come from a reading of both superb works from these two outstanding authors . --Danny Boy
I found this book very interesting. The fall of the III reich is well described in details, hopless situations, retreating armies, Hitler's bunker madness, etc. Everything in this book deserves interest. It was a good introduction to the subject for me and brought a lot of knowledge. Some parts are obviously debatable as pointed out by other reviewers but overall good read. --By Eric le rouge (London, UK
This book by Lucas however is worth reading -it has short chapters which contain lots of information not covered elsewhere, especially where it has extensive treatment of what happened in Bohemia and ,Czechoslovakia and especially Austria....the eastern front didnt just mean Poland and what happened in Prussia. and more importantly the war did not just stop in Berlin with Hitler's death. Perhaps he comes across as pro-German i would say more anti-communist ...the hapless victims of Czech and Yugoslav vengeance were women and children and civilians and you cant just say they deserved what happened to them. I do like to write a review well before i have finished it as books either grip me or they dont..and this one does.Graphic..am about to read the chapters on Italy and the western front. We are lucky because for us it is history not something we have had to experience. --By Susan Green "zipdog55"
