Críticas:

"To register the immense difference separating Henry's mind and world from what followed is the central achievement of this accomplished and delightfully written book. It rests not only on Professor Russell's mastery of the most recent scholarship, but on the closeness and acuteness of his own reading of often fragmentary and incomplete sources... The outcome may well be the finest work of history to be published this year." J. M. Roberts, Times Literary Supplement "An outstanding volume that will take decades to supersede." Frank McLynn, New Statesman "Russell presents a... fascinating man in a superbly written and thought-provoking book." Economist "An illuminating and well-written life of the founding figure of the Age of Exploration... A complete, scholarly, and thoroughly readable look at one of the key shapers of the modern world - lavishly illustrated with period maps and paintings." Kirkus Reviews

Reseña del editor:

This enthralling life of the legendary fifteenth-century Portuguese prince, Henry the Navigator, is the first comprehensive biography in more than a century. Examining the full range of the prince's activities as an imperialist and as a maritime, cartographical and navigational pioneer, Peter Russell shows that while Henry was firmly rooted in medieval times, his innovations set in motion changes that altered the history of Europe and regions far beyond.

Descripción Yale University Press, United States, 2001. Paperback. Estado de conservación: New. New edition. 190 x 124 mm. Language: English . Brand New Book. Henry the Navigator, fifteenth-century Portuguese prince and explorer, is a legendary, almost mythical figure in late medieval history. Considered along with Columbus to be one of the progenitors of modernity, Prince Henry challenged the scientific assumptions of his age and was responsible for liberating Europeans from geographical restraints that had bound them since the Roman Empire s collapse. In this enthralling account of Henry s life-the first biography of The Navigator in more than a century-Peter Russell reaps the harvest of a lifelong study of Prince Henry. Making full use of documentary evidence only recently available, Russell reevaluates Henry and his role in Portuguese and European history. Examining the full range of Prince Henry s activities, Russell discusses the explorer s image as an imperialist and as a maritime, mathematical, and navigational pioneer. He considers Henry s voyages of discovery in the African Atlantic, their economic and cultural consequences, and the difficult questions they generated regarding international law and papal jurisdiction.Russell demonstrates the degree to which Henry was motivated by the predictions of his astrologer-an aspect of his career little known until now-and explains how this innovator, though firmly rooted in medieval ways of thinking and behaving, set in motion a current of change that altered European history. Descripción Estado de conservación: New. Prince Henry of Portugal, an iconic figure of Renaissance history, is widely perceived to be responsible for Europe's great expansion of exploration and discovery. However, as Russell reveals, this image was one created partly by English writers keen to emphasise Henry's own English heritage and in no small part by Prince Henry himself. By digging deeper into the sparse archival evidence, Russell uncovers 'an obstinately enigmatic personality who seems, chameleon-like, to present a range of different images according to the various contexts in which we come across him'. The prince was not only able to lead the immense Portuguese capture of Ceuta in 1415 and devise a scheme to gain a monopoly of slaves and precious goods through Madeira and the Canary Islands, but was careful throughout to ensure that his public persona was first and foremost 'a soldier of the Church Militant'. While Henry was firmly rooted in medieval times, his innovations set in motion changes that altered the history of Europe and regions far beyond. This study presents a more realistic (though less loveable) depiction of this key figure in the Age of Discovery. . . . may well be the finest work of history to be published this year.
