" Wide-ranging and ambitious, this collection includes many of the best Fuller scholars as well as some new voices. It succeeds admirably as it moves from extreme closeups focusing on the dramatic historical events of 1848-49 to panoramic vistas that link Fuller to transnational cultural concerns." -- Jeffrey Steele, editor of "The Essential Margaret Fuller" "Wide-ranging and ambitious, this collection includes many of the best Fuller scholars as well as some new voices. Jeffrey Steele, editor of The Essential Margaret Fuller" "This long-awaited second volume of Capper's Bancroft Prize-winning biography of Fuller fulfills all expectations .... Capper has crafted both an intimate life and a subtle analysis of Fuller's work."--Publishers Weekly [starred review] "Charles Capper does not simply know about Margaret Fuller; he knows Fuller herself--her mind and heart, her hopes and fears. This biography is a monument to both its brilliant subject and her sensitive, perceptive biographer."--Daniel Walker Howe, Oxford University "Capper's Margaret Fuller is a triumph. A revolutionary, a feminist, an intellectual, a wife and a mother, Margaret Fuller lived a rich full life. This is a rich full account of it, easily the best life of Fuller ever written."--Robert D. Richardson, author of Emerson: The Mind on Fire "Grounded in remarkably rich research and filled with illuminating interpretations, Capper's The Public Years brings to the fore one of America's most expansive intellectuals. Capper makes tangible the power and passion with which Fuller acted on her most basic conviction-that the mind was a limitless resource for meaning and value. Culminating in a call for a radically democratic social and cultural nationalism, Fuller's Romantic cosmopolitanism spoke to her nation's promise then and now. The Public Years is a tour de force."--Mary Kelley, University of Michigan "In tracing Margaret Fuller's life as she moved from New England to New York, from New York to Rome, Charles Capper gives a remarkable account of the intellectual life of two continents. His imaginative recreation of the world she lived in enables us to understand both her rapid development as a writer and her powerful influenceupon the people whose lives she touched."--Barbara Packer, University of California, Los Angeles "Charles Capper's admirably researched, keenly searching, and even-handedly judicious account of Margaret Fuller's life, career, and times will undoubtedly stand for generations to come the authoritative biography of one of this nation's most important, influential women intellectuals -as the court of first resort for all serious study of Fuller's thought, writing, significance."--Lawrence Buell, Harvard University "A fitting companion to the award-winning first volume, Capper concludes his majestic study of Fuller and her times with panache by recreating her New York newspaper days, European travels, participation in the Roman revolution, and describing her loves. This brilliant achievement is the definitive biography of this seminal figure in American literature and feminism."--Joel Myerson, editor of Transcendentalism: A Reader "Charles Capper does not simply know about Margaret Fuller; he knows Fuller herself--her mind and heart, her hopes and fears. Margaret Fuller (1810-1850), a pioneering gender theorist, transcendentalist, journalist, and literary critic, was one of the most well-known and highly regarded feminist intellectuals of nineteenth-century America. With her contemporaries Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, she was one of the predominant writers of the Transcendentalist movement, and she aligned herself in both her public and private life with the European revolutionary fervor of the 1840s. She traveled to Italy as a foreign correspondent for the New York Tribune to cover the nascent revolutions, pursuing the transnational ideal awakened in her youth by a classical education in European languages and a Romantic curiosity about other cultures, traditions, and identities. This volume is a collaboration of international scholars who, from varied fields and approaches, assess Fuller's genius and character. Treating the last several years of Margaret Fuller's short life, these essays offer a truly international discussion of Fuller's unique cultural, political, and personal achievements. From the origins and articulations of Fuller's cosmopolitanism to her examination of ""the woman question,"" and from her fascination with the European ""other"" to her candid perception of imperial America from abroad, they ponder what such an extraordinary woman meant to America, and also to Italy and Europe, during her lifetime and continuing to the present.
