Kindergarten-Grade 3-This well-written story told in Spanish and English is also a book about science, nature, and conservation efforts. Valent'n is a vampire bat who wants to understand why humans are terrified of him and his ilk. In his search for the answer, he befriends a cow and discovers that he belongs to a species that drinks animal blood and sometimes transmits rabies. He learns that there are many types of bat families, most of which are beneficial to humans. Valent'n tries to find alternatives for his diet so that he won't be labeled as "evil." The story is easy to read and entertaining, and has expressive black-ink illustrations.
