Excerpt from A Visit to Bashan and Argob
Perhaps some of the buildings of the time of Moses still exist - the sixty cities of Argob, the cities of the giants. They may be recognised by what is called the Cyclopean architecture, not built in courses, but the stones unsquared, selected to fit into each other. The greater portion of the existing buildings are of the Greek period, squared and dressed, with many Greek inscriptions, sometimes with the Syrian dates given. To these are to be added the Christian buildings of the time of Imperial Rome. The importance of the region in Greek and Roman times is shown by the number of coins of the various cities, especially of Bosra.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book is an enthralling firsthand account of a Western archaeological and cultural expedition to the historical Bashan and Argob regions of Syria during 1894. The explorers, led by an experienced author, ventured into a remote and dangerous part of the world to study the region's rich ancient past and its significance within Biblical history. The expedition and subsequent book provide an unparalleled look at the region's largely unexplored archaeological sites, including ancient abandoned towns and villages, temples, and other structures. The author's detailed descriptions, maps, and photographs bring to life the fascinating history of these areas, from their origins as centers of various kingdoms and empires to their eventual abandonment. The text is enriched by the author's insightful discussions on the historical, cultural, and religious significance of the sites, weaving together Biblical references, local legends, and archaeological evidence. The book also explores the challenges and rewards of archaeological research in a region where political turmoil and cultural sensitivities often intersected with the author's explorations. Ultimately, this book is a valuable contribution to the understanding of the ancient world and the history of the Middle East, offering readers a unique glimpse into a region that has been largely forgotten by time.
