Excerpt from The Comprehensive Concordance to the Holy Scriptures
To Rabbi Mordecai (or Isaac) Nathan is to be awarded the honor of having prepared the first Hebrew concordance. Beginning his task in 1438 he did not finish it even with the aid of many helpers until 1448. The reason for his undertaking it he states in his preface. Subjected to repeated challenges by some of his companions, in his search for materials with which to answer them he lighted upon a Latin concordance. This furnished him with an armory which his assailants could not resist. The thought came to him that a concordance of the Hebrew Bible would be of even greater value to the student of the Scriptures, and hence he set about its preparation. His work, a folio, was published in 15 23 or 1524 at Venice by Daniel Bomberg. Its title, The Light to the Way, seems to have been suggested by the sudden light which was thrown upon his path by the discovery of the Latin concordance. A very defective Latin trans lation by Reuchlin appeared at Basel in 1556. Editions in Hebrew followed at Venice in 1564 and at Basel in 1581.
