Críticas:

Li Narangoa and Robert Cribb have produced an outstanding milestone in Asian historical geography, putting between two covers an accurate and well-organized synopsis of modern and early modern history in between the Chinese, Russian, and Japanese heartlands. Northeast Asia emerges as a dynamic sphere of interaction between local, national, and international forces. This book will be useful for classes in history and geography and essential for the reference shelf of every student of Northeast Asia. -- Christopher P. Atwood, Indiana University Historical Atlas of Northeast Asia is a unique and extremely welcome contribution to the study of a critical region during its most important centuries. Taking as a premise that the histories, geographies, and resulting politics of Korea, Manchuria, Mongolia, and Eastern Siberia are intertwined, this books relates the major events and plots the most significant sites decade by decade from the end of the sixteenth century into the twenty-first. No single volume offers this kind of information; here it is presented in a wide variety of beautifully rendered maps. This book opens largely untrafficked parts of Asia to wide readership. It promises to become a standard reference for historians, political scientists, and geographers, as well as anyone who appreciates serious cartography. -- Nancy S. Steinhardt, Professor of East Asian Art, University of Pennsylvania The challenges faced by the producers of this region's historical atlas -- crossed by so many territorial, linguistic, ethnic and other shifting borders-- were formidable indeed. They have succeeded in producing a small treasure--not least in the multi-language table of place names-- for all interested in the region. It also represents an innovative method to recognize and rescue a region whose history has been obscured by superpowers through much of history. -- Prasenjit Duara, Raffles Professor of Humanities and Director of Asia Research Institute, NUS, Singapore

The authors define the region ecologically instead of politically, focusing on the interaction of nomadic conquerors with the expanding empires of Russia and China and the Korean state. They outline boundaries with vivid colors and carefully locate major towns and geographic features, while also providing a concise integrated political narrative for each decade over nearly five hundred years. Such an effective combination of visual and narrative information makes this an essential resource for anyone researching or teaching about this critical region of Asia. -- Peter C. Perdue, Yale University

Descripción Columbia University Press, United States, 2014. Hardback. Estado de conservación: New. 259 x 206 mm. Language: English . Brand New Book. Four hundred years ago, indigenous peoples occupied the vast region that today encompasses Korea, Manchuria, the Mongolian Plateau, and Eastern Siberia. Over time, these populations struggled to maintain autonomy as Russia, China, and Japan sought hegemony over the region. Especially from the turn of the twentieth century onward, indigenous peoples pursued self-determination in a number of ways, and new states, many of them now largely forgotten, rose and fell as great power imperialism, indigenous nationalism, and modern ideologies competed for dominance. This atlas tracks the political configuration of Northeast Asia in ten-year segments from 1590 to 1890, in five-year segments from 1890 to 1960, and in ten-year segments from 1960 to 2010, delineating the distinct history and importance of the region. The text follows the rise and fall of the Qing dynasty in China, founded by the semi-nomadic Manchus; the Russian colonization of Siberia; the growth of Japanese influence; the movements of peoples, armies, and borders; and political, social, and economic developments-reflecting the turbulence of the land that was once the world s cradle of conflict. Compiled from detailed research in English, Chinese, Japanese, French, Dutch, German, Mongolian, and Russian sources, the Historical Atlas of Northeast Asia incorporates information made public with the fall of the Soviet Union and includes fifty-five specially drawn maps, as well as twenty historical maps contrasting local and outsider perspectives. Four introductory maps survey the region s diverse topography, climate, vegetation, and ethnicity. Nº de ref. de la librería AAZ9780231160704
