9780224096836: Mrs Weber's Omnibus

For the first time, a complete collection of the classic Guardian strips that made Posy Simmonds famous

In May 1977 Posy Simmonds, an unknown young illustrator, started drawing a weekly comic strip for the Guardian. It began as a silly parody of girls' adventure stories, making satirical comments about contemporary life. The strip soon focused on three 1950s school friends in their later middle-class and nearly middle-aged lives: Wendy Weber, a former nurse married to polytechnic sociology lecturer George with a large brood of children; Jo Heep, married to whiskey salesman Edmund with two rebellious teenagers; and Trish Wright, married to philandering advertising executive Stanhope and with a young baby. The strip, which was untitled and usually known just as Posy, ran until the late 1980s. Collected here for the first time are the complete strips. Although celebrated for pinpointing the concerns of Guardian readers in the 1980s and their constant struggle to remain true to the ideals of the 1960s, they are in fact remarkably undated. They show the cartoonist who'd become celebrated for Gemma Bovery and Tamara Drewe, maturing into genius.

"A wonderful and slightly evil book."  —Publishers Weekly starred review of Posy Simmonds

"Delightfully clever satire . . . Ms. Simmonds's drawings completely embody the tone of this book: bemused affection for her characters combined with delicately barbed sarcasm and fresh, cheeky, wit."  —New York Times on Gemma Bovery

Descripción Jonathan Cape. 1 No Jacket(s), 2012. soft. Estado de conservación: New. In May 1977, young illustrator Posy Simmonds drew her first weekly comic strip for London's Guardian. It began as a parody of girls' adventure stories, commenting on contemporary life, but soon came to focus on three 1950s school friends in their later middle-class and nearly middle-aged lives: Wendy Weber, a former nurse married to polytechnic sociology lecturer George with a large brood of children; Jo Heep, married to whisky salesman Edmund with two rebellious teenaged boys; and Trish Wright, married to philandering advertising executive Stanhope, with a stepdaughter and a young baby. First known as Mrs Weber's Diary, and later untitled—usually referred to simply as "Posy"—the strips ran until the late 1980s, and though celebrated for pinpointing the concerns of Guardian readers at the time, they are in fact remarkably undated and bitingly satiric observations of perennial family and social dynamics. This chunky omnibus gathers all of Simmonds's strips, originally appearing in six separate collections. 488. Nº de ref. de la librería 71503

Descripción Jonathan Cape, 2012. Estado de conservación: New. The award-winning illustrator and graphic novelist Posy Simmonds may be best known for Tamara Drewe and Gemma Bovery, which have both been made into films starring Gemma Arterton. But her earlier work is equally worthy of celebration. This heavyweight anthology collects her long-running strip that ran in the Guardian throughout the 1980s about the middle-class, mid-life woes of three 1950s school friends, as they try to remain true to the ideals of the 1960s.
