IT was early autumn, and the woods were only just beginning to take to themselves the variegated colours which make our northern forests a wonder to foreigners and an annual delight to those who live within sight of their glorious changes, that two men might have been seen forcing their way through the underbush of a tamarack swamp, which divided two small lakes near the centre of the wilderness. On the shoulders and head of one was balanced a birch canoe, larger than the average make, while the other was literally loaded down beneath a monstrous pack-basket, which was not only full of camp and trapping materials, but had tied to it a dozen and - one articles for culinary and camp use.
