Excerpt: ... OBERT GORDON was tho only son of a doctor in the Indian army. Most of his life had been spent in India, where his father had been stationed with his regiment; but when he was nine years of age he came to England with his father and mother. Dr Gordon was obliged to return home on account of his Avife's delicate health. She had been a great sufferer in India, and he had known for many months that she was rapidly becoming worse. He was therefore, anxious to bring her home that she might have further advice, and be cheered by being amongst her friends. The long, tedious journey, however, was too much for her in her weak state of health, and she died soon after they arrived in London. This sad event was a great trial to Dr Gordon. He had hoped that the change home might be of great benefit to his suffering wife, and that it might be granted to him to enjoy still some years of her companionship. Eobert was quite old enough to know what a serious loss his mother's death was to him. She had been the best of mothers, and he had been her constant companion. Even through her illness she had taught him whenever she was well enough to be up, and in spite of her delicate health had been untiring in her devotion to him. But all was changed, and Robert's bright prospects of happiness in England were at an end; for she, who had made his past life so happy, had been taken to her heavenly rest. One day, soon after the funeral, Dr Gordon called Robert to him, and told him that he would very soon have to leave him to return to India, and that on this account he had arranged to send him to live with his aunt and uncle, Mr and Mrs Murray, at Lewisham, near London. Robert was very unhappy at hearing this. His face grew sad, and his eyes filled with tears; he threw his arms round...
