9780199544806: International Relations and the European Union (New European Union Series)

International Relations and the European Union uniquely incorporates the study of the EU's world role into the wider field of International Relations. New chapters on the EU's relationships with emerging world powers, and its stance on energy and environmental policy confirm the second edition as the leading textbook on this subject.

Beginning with an examination of theoretical and methodological frameworks, the book goes on to address the institutions and processes that surround the EU's international relations. Areas of key policy substance, such as security and trade are then outlined in detail, alongside the EU's relations with specific countries including the United States, China, India and Russia.

The second edition of International Relations and the European Union is thoroughly up-to-date with all the latest developments including the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty and the consequences of the global financial crisis. Contributions from leading experts encourage students to think critically about the EU's role in world politics over the last fifty years and ask: who and what is the EU for, in its international relations? What should it be trying to achieve?

Review:

"This comprehensive and authoritative overview of the EUs place in international relations will be an important point of reference both for specialists and those looking for an introduction to the field. Conceiving of the EU as a system of international relations, Hill and Smith provide an excellent analytical starting point for disentangling the complex interactions between the Unions internal processes and international relations more widely. "--Helene Sjursen, Research Professor, ARENA Centre for European Studies, University of Oslo

"International Relations and the European Union looks set to become the definitive text for the study of Europes global role. Hill and Smith have judiciously chosen from the leading scholars in the field to produce a volume that draws on a wide range of expertise. Across its chapters the contributors collectively combine a breadth of coverage to both inform the new-comer to the subject yet also to still provide insight for the more experienced scholar."--Richard Whitman, Professor of Politics, University of Bath

"Compelling, well structured and comprehensive, this textbook is an excellent up-to-date introduction into the ever increasing complexity of the relations of the European Union to its international environment. The second edition of this invaluable guide addresses the latest changes brought by the global financial crisis and the come into force of the Lisbon Treaty and thus provides fruitful insights into the shifting institutional architecture and the expanding activities of the entangled European IR arena. Highly recommended. "--Wolfgang Wessels, Chair of Political Science, University of Cologne
