9780199215584: 2: Ezra Pound: Poet: Volume II: The Epic Years

This second volume of A. David Moody's full-scale portrait, covering Ezra Pound's middle years, weaves together into a single highly readable and challenging narrative, in a way that has not been done before, the illuminating story of his life, his achievement as a poet and a composer, and his one-man crusade for economic justice.

There is new insight into his complicated personal relationships. There are detailed accounts of the composition of his two operas and of his original contribution to the theory of harmony. A canto by canto and decad by decad elucidation of the form and meaning of the first seventy-one cantos of his epic reveals their hitherto unperceived musical structures and their overall design. The thinking behind his support for Mussolini's economic programme during the Great Depression of the 1930s is brought to light, and shown to be not "fascist" but essentially true to the principles of the American Revolution, and, behind that, to Confucian ideas of responsible government. At the same time it is made clear that he saw only what he wanted to see in Mussolini's Fascism, and later in Hitler's Nazism, and was blind to their darker policies. And it is clear that he went most seriously wrong in deploying, as a weapon in his war on the injustice of the capitalist financial system, the anti-Semitism endemic in Europe and America and at that time turning murderous in Nazi Germany.

Pound is revealed as a great poet and a flawed idealist caught up in the turmoil of his darkening time and struggling, sometimes blindly and in error and self-contradiction, to be a force for enlightenment.

A third volume will carry on the narrative of his life and works from 1939 to his death in 1972.

About the Author:

A. David Moody is a Professor Emeritus of the University of York, and the author of the acclaimed Thomas Stearns Eliot: Poet.

Review:

"This second volume of Moody's projected three-volume biography continues the excellent scholarship of the first volume... Moody is an astute reader of Pound's poetic technique, locating the historical and musical structures in his poetry, and of the historical context it manifested. Essential." --CHOICE

"'The Epic Years 1921-1939' is the second volume of a magnificent biography (a third volume will follow) that will surely take its place among the most important studies of any Modernist writer. Mr. Moody, emeritus professor of literature at York University, never succumbs to amateur psychoanalysis or gossip... Instead, he relates Pound's life with economy, attention to evidence-letters, published writings, documents-and a meticulous close reading of the work." --The Wall Street Journal

"It's Moody's exceptional ability to distance himself from his subject matter that makes this book such a powerful reading experience... Moody's greatest gift as a biographer is to only pass judgment when he feels he has to. His agenda is simply to understand Ezra Pound: his difficulties, rage, madness, obsessive nature, blatant racism, and genius. And in that job he has succeeded, marvelously so." --The Toronto Star

"Another impressive installment in what will surely stand as the definitive biography of a flawed titan." --Booklist

"Moody is even-handed in judgment and provides thorough readings of Pound's most important poetry... For those who insist on a full and accurate account, Moody's biography is a monument to scholarship and energy." --The Dallas Morning News

"This carefully documented work...is highly recommended for serious Pound scholars." --Library Journal

"[A] considerable achievement... The best parts of Moody's book involve especially the progress of events in the 1930s that increasingly provoked Pound into excesses of political imprudence." --The Hudson Review

"Nobody has a hope of understanding Ezra Pound unless they have read this book and its predecessor. The third volume will bring to a conclusion a project as extraordinary in its way as the life it chronicles." --The New Criterion

"Moody is an astute and superbly thorough guide to Pound's views, behavior, and writings. . .he seeks to do scholarly justice to the work as well as giving us a richly detailed portrait of the man." --The New York Review of Books

"[Moody's] critical sense is keen and his defence of Pound's poetry judicious." --The National Post

Volume II of A. David Moody's detailed biography follows Pound through 1920s Paris and 1930s Italy, where he endorsed Fascism for what he saw as its commitment to economic justice... Moody maintains a non-judgmental tone, allowing Pound's eccentricities and prejudices as well as his brilliance to speak for itself." --The Milwaukee Shepherd Express
