Elinore sits alone and weeps in the tower room where she has been told to spin straw into gold. No one can do such a thing, unless it's the strange little man who mysteriously appears at the stroke of midnight. He claims he can, but not unless the price is right. Elinore offers her necklace and ring, but they won't be enough. Only her firstborn child will satisfy the wicked little man. Afraid to make such a promise, and just as afraid not to, Elinore watches in fear as the spinning wheel begins to turn - whirr, whirr, whirr. The mystery and magic of this timeless tale have been wonderfully enhanced by Dorothy Joan Harris and Regolo Ricci. In their hands, Rumpelstiltskin has become a story from the past for today's children. After almost two hundred years, these characters have come to life as feeling, thinking people with choices to make and lessons to learn.

Dorothy Joan Harris was born in Kobe, Japan on February 14, 1931, and came to Canada in 1938. She graduated from the University of Toronto in modern languages, then taught in France and Japan. In 1955, she married Alan Harris, settled in Toronto, and was editor with Copp Clark Publishers. She began writing for her two children, Kim and Doug, and has gone on to write for other people's children.
Regolo Ricci is a fine artist who has illustrated many books. Born in Italy, but raised in Canada, he is largely self-taught and has an avid interest in the classics and art history. In The Lord is My Shepherd, Regolo combines his love of illuminated manuscripts and the flora and fauna of rural Ontario to create a panorama that truly does justice to the text. His attention to detail and his meticulous draftsmanship make this a memorable example of illustration at its finest. Also illustrated by Regolo Ricci and available from Tundra Books is The Market Wedding, by Cary Fagan, which was nominated for the prestigious Governor General's Literary Award for Children's Book Illustration.
