This introduction to the principles of low-temperature engineering emphasizes the design and analysis of cryogenic systems. The new edition includes fresh material on superconductivity, liquid natural gas technology, rectification system design, refrigerators, and instrumentation. SI units are now used throughout the book. Unlike the previous edition, which was designed primarily as a college text, the new edition is written to serve as a professional reference as well, and is particularly useful for mechanical and chemical engineers involved in the design of cryogenic systems. Since the publication of the first edition of this text, the field of cryogenics has continued its rapid growth and development. Although the effort expended in space exploration and the corresponding large use of cryogenic fluids by NASA in space vehicles has declined somewhat from the peak years during the 1960s, application of cryogenics has spread into a variety of areas of science and engineering. The 1970s could be called a 'decade of diversification' for cryogenic engineering.
