Arthur Ransome (1884-1967) was a journalist and writer, travelling widely in Russia, China and Egypt. His most famous books are the Swallows and Amazons series, including We Didn't Mean to Go to Sea. Before writing the story, he made the journey himself, sailing his own boat across the North Sea to Holland and back.
