One of the most interesting and unusual new publicatons for the Christmas period is World Carols for Choirs . . . Certainly the editors have done a remarkable job in unearthing suitable authors from around the world. Many, if not nearly all the composers will be unfamiliar names to most who purchase this volume . . . Surprises are frequent in this adventurous collection. One is that although all the contributions are contemporary, there is little or nothing included that reflects anything resembling a modernist approach to compositon. That has not precluded, however, the inclusion of some highly idiomatic music . . . In all, this is a publication that offers a tantalising window onto some very different musical worlds. No publisher over the last 30 years has done more to promote and enrich our understanding of music for the Christmas season than OUP, and with this voume they have provided yet another rich seam to explore.
