9780192817457: Sir Charles Grandison (The World's Classics)

First published in 1753, Richardson's third novel was immensely popular. Richardson draws on every kind of narrative technique in this intricate and logically patterned novel. He creates a work that is at once a novel of manners, a novel of sensibility, a Gothic novel--a variety of genres that highlight his gift for witty character sketch and brisk dialogue.

From the Publisher:

Samuel Richardson's massive seven volume history appeared in 1754, and even Jane Austen could not resist the charms of Sir Charles Grandison. Jane Austen historians are well familiar with her fascination of Sir Charles Grandison. She wrote dramatic versions for her family and friends, while having her book characters mock Richardson's work.

Now, in the 21st century, The History of Charles Grandison has once again been edited, revised, and modernized, and perhaps most importantly, condensed.

This edition, based on research into Richardson's intention, is highly readable and preserves the original language, and captures Richardson's playful power.

From the Author:

The 1754 editor has readily undertaken to publish this series of letters because he thinks human nature has been shewn in a light too degrading. He hopes that his prolixity will be forgiven.

The 2004 editor, while appreciating prolixity, also appreciates the basic happiness achieved by reading a book in one sitting. This edition attempts to decrease repetitive ideas and phrases, increase readability through structural modifications, and bring the exemplary writing of Samuel Richardson to a modern audience.

To demonstrate our deep respect and admiration of the original editions, we present you with reviews from authors of the canon.
