Of all types of literature, children's literature is perhaps the best loved, most varied, and most subtly influential. Its history is not merely a footnote to social history, but a fascinating reflection of the way in which society sees itself and how it wishes itself to be seen, of how childhood is defined, controlled, and appreciated.
